The comprehensibility of materials compressed and then .expanded by means of an electromechanical process was tested with 280 Army inductees divided into groups of high and low mental aptitude. Three short listening selections relating to military activities were subjected to compression and compression-expansion to produce seven versions. Data indicate that expanding previously compressed materials to restore the word rate to normal:may restore the comprehension of the material to very near normal when.the compression/expansion is limited to 40%. Present results substantiate findings that factors limiting the comprehensibility of rapid speech reside more with the inability of the listener to process rapid rates of speech than with the signal distortion produced by the equipment or compression process..(Author) Professional Paper 6-72 iumRROPP.6-72 March 1972 bol.) The positive and negative regulation of Tn10 transposition by IHF is mediated by structurally asymmetric transposon arms.
The Tn10 transpososome has symmetrical components on either side: there are two transposon ends each of which has binding sites for a monomer of transposase and an IHF heterodimer. The DNA bending activity of IHF stimulates assembly of an intermediate with tightly folded transposon ends in which transposase has additional 'subterminal' DNA contacts, located distal to the IHF site. These subterm...
متن کاملIntegration host factor (IHF) dictates the structure of polyamine-DNA condensates: implications for the role of IHF in the compaction of bacterial chromatin.
Integration host factor (IHF), a nucleoid-associated protein in bacterial cells, is implicated in a number of chromosomal functions including DNA compaction. IHF binds to all duplex DNA with micromolar affinity and at sequence-specific sites with much higher affinity. IHF is known to induce sharp bends in the helical axis of DNA in both modes of binding, but the role of IHF in controlling DNA c...
متن کاملIntegration host factor plays a role in IS50 and Tn5 transposition.
In Escherichia coli, the frequencies of IS50 and Tn5 transposition are greater in Dam- cells than in isogenic Dam+ cells. IS50 transposition is increased approximately 1,000-fold and Tn5 transposition frequencies are increased about 5- to 10-fold in the absence of Dam methylation. However, in cells that are deficient for both integration host factor (IHF) and Dam methylase, the transposition fr...
متن کاملSymmetry and asymmetry in the function of Escherichia coli integration host factor: implications for target identification by DNA-binding proteins.
BACKGROUND Escherichia coli integration host factor (IHF) is a DNA-binding protein that participates in a wide variety of biochemical functions. In many of its activities, IHF appears to act as an architectural element, dramatically distorting the conformation of bound DNA. IHF is a dimer of non-identical subunits, each about 90 amino acids long. One dimer interacts specifically with a 30 base ...

As I stand before you today, to deliver the Dr. D.L. N. Murti Rao Oration, I am overwhelmmed by a series of emotions. Gratitude, because I realise that the Indian Psychiatric Society has honoured me by inviting me to deliver this oration this year; humility because I am aware of my inadequacy to do full justice to this great responsibility; happiness because I am getting a chance to deliver an ...
